Libraries of all types and sizes are encouraged to join the Ohio Preservation Council, a broad coalition of Ohio libraries, archives, historical societies, and conservation resources. Its mission is to provide a network for preservation education and to support preservation activities within the state.

The OPC has its roots in the Ohio Conservation Consortium, formed in 1983 under the vision and guidance of Walter Braham, former state librarian of Ohio and Connecticut. It has a long history of raising awareness about the importance of preservation, and providing education opportunities through workshops, symposia and hands-on training on a wide variety of preservation and conservation techniques. Guests and visitors are always welcome at attend membership meetings, which are held four times a year.

A critical concern of the OPC is the need to properly balance preservation with access to materials, and to recognize that new digitization technologies are a good means of increasing access, but must not be relied upon as a long term preservation solution.

Preservation Issues is the OPC’s electronic publication to discuss current issues and trends in preservation, and to report on activities and events of interest to the membership.

In collaboration with the Intermuseum Conservation Association of Cleveland, the oldest non-profit regional conservation center in the country, the OPC is developing a traveling program to introduce a wide variety of preservation issues. The program is designed to raise awareness and to provide a wealth of resource information about all aspects of preservation. The program is for libraries, historical societies, all political subdivisions, museums, church libraries, and any other institution responsible for preserving and providing access to our cultural heritage. Detailed information will be available this summer, with presentations scheduled to begin this fall.

The OPC is supported by members' annual dues, ranging from $25 to $200, based on the annual operating budget of the Institution/Organization in whose name the membership is held. Individual membership is $25 per year. Visit the How to Join to become a member.
